E-mail: jesus@ufrrj.br The objective of this serum-epidemiologic inquiry was to associate the occurrence of vaginal discharge, abortions, mummified phoetuses, repetitive breeding and abscesses in nuts covered by natural service with brucellosis infection. From July to December 2008, five blood samples were colleted and serum samples were submitted to serum agglutination test with buffer acidified antigen (AAT) for brucellosis. In the first trial, of the 10 matrices with reproductive disturbances, 3/10 (30.0%) were positives. In the second trial, matrices and reproducers had prevalence of 12.8% (5/34) females. In the third trial the prevalence of 8.9% for the flock, consisted of 282 swine, being 19/137 (12.2%) female and 6/120 (4.8%) male were reagents, with a difference for sex (p=0.0349) and not for age. Being thus, sanitary culling of the reacting animals was recommended. After the discard, two trials were done once more and no reacting animals were found. As the swine farms aim to the certification for sales of reproducers, a remain flock was discarded. A new breed was formed with rigid measured of sanitation for purchasing and selling animals, therefore, this work serves of alert, so that the brucellosis examination should be adopted as routine in swine farms in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
