E-mail: fabiane-vet@hotmail.com An analysis of the historical evolution demonstrates how the use of animal models in experimental surgery played a fundamental role in the development of surgery and consolidation of scientific knowledge. Despite of the justified ethical and growing concern about reducing the unnecessary use of animals in scientific experiments, this review points out the benefits from the use of animals in scientific research, particularly in the field of surgery.
