Bacteremia transitória em cães com doença periodontal em diferentes procedimentos odontológicos e usuais. E-mail: rbotteon@ufrrj.br Based on the premise that trauma may possibly introduce bacteria into the bloodstream, this study was conducted to investigate the frequency of transient bacteremia from various dental and usual procedures by in dogs. We evaluated 36 dogs classified as severity of periodontal disease: T1 (n=5) healthy gums / Negative Control, T2 (n=6) - mild gingivitis, T 3 (n=6) - moderate to severe gingivitis / food, T 4 (n=6) - moderate to severe gingivitis / brushing, T 5 (n=6) - moderate to severe periodontitis / removal of subgingival plaque, T5 (n=7) - severe periodontitis / tooth extraction. Blood samples for blood culture were obtained before the procedures and two of them after 30 minutes from the procedures. The blood culture was performed in triphasic Hemobac. We obtained 24.7% of positive blood cultures. Of these, 16% were performed before, 36% immediately after and 22.2% thirty minutes after the procedures, with a predominance of Staphylococcus sp and Streptococcus sp in the treated groups T1, T2 and T3.
