E-mail: vaniabit@ufrrj.br The tropical horse tick, Dermacentor nitens, is an ectoparasite that causes greats economical losses due to the hematophagism, transmission of pathogens and embargoes during the transportation and commercialization of horses. Beauveria bassiana is a worldwide distributed entomopathogenic fungus that has been demonstrating propitious results on in vitro tests against ticks. Mineral oil-based formulations protect conidia from adverse conditions increasing the fungus virulence on arthropods. The current study aimed evaluates the effect of a commercial product (Boveril®) on D. nitens eggs, larvae and engorged females. Two oil concentrations were tested (0.5% or 10%) with different conidia concentrations (107 conidia ml-1 or 108 conidia ml-1). The biological parameters of ticks’ engorged females were significantly reduced by the 10% oil formulation containing 107 or 108 conidia ml-1. The weight of eggs, egg production index and nutritional index were reduced in up to 49.9%, 74.5% and 69% respectively. The control percentage of ticks’ females reached 66.8% when Boveril® was formulated with 10% mineral oil. Oil-based formulations also were efficient for D. nitens eggs and larvae. Accordingly Boveril® mineral oil-based formulations were efficient for different D. nitens stages. This is the first report of the commercial product Boveril® as a promising alternative to control D. nitens ticks.
