E-mail: liliancsobatista@hotmail.com The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of pyriprole in control of Psoroptes ovis and Leporacarus gibbus in naturally infested rabbits. Twelve rabbits (six males and six females) with a mean weight of three pounds were used. Six animals were treated with a product based pyriprole at a dose of 12.5mg/kg, each receiving 0.1 mL on the back and 0.1 mL in each auditory canal. Another six rabbits were unmedicated, received saline in the same proportion, being kept as a control group. The animals were evaluated on days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 post-treatment for the presence of P. ovis live in cerumen and for the presence of L. gibbus in five distinct areas of the body (neck, lower back right and left, base of the tail and groin). Also evaluated the degree of injury caused by P. ovis ears before and after treatment in those experimental days. The product based pyriprole was 100 % effective in controlling both mites and was responsible for the remission of the lesions of scabies psoroptic in treated animals. No adverse reactions were observed in any animal receiving treatment becoming a tool to control these ectoparasites.
